Items Movers May Refuse in Wake County

Do not pack hazardous, flammable, corrosive, explosive or pressurized materials as ordinary household goods. Ask your mover for its prohibited list, then arrange safe use, transfer or disposal before moving day.

Decide what stays off the moving truck

Set aside anything flammable, explosive, corrosive, toxic or pressurized before packing begins. Common examples can include fuels, propane cylinders, ammunition, fireworks, pool chemicals, pesticides, paint products, solvents, cleaning chemicals, fire extinguishers and certain batteries. This is a screening list, not a universal rule: acceptance depends on the material and the mover’s written policy. Do not hide, combine, drain or relabel a substance to make it appear transportable. Keep products in their original labeled containers when possible and follow official handling instructions.

Separate food, plants, medicine and valuables

These belongings require individual decisions even when they are not hazardous. Use, donate or discard perishables before the move unless you have confirmed a suitable way to transport them. Ask the mover whether plants are accepted and consider temperature, transit time and destination restrictions. Keep prescription medicine, medical supplies needed in transit and temperature-sensitive products with you under appropriate conditions. Personally carry identification, financial records, keys, electronic backups, jewelry, irreplaceable documents and other small valuables rather than placing them in a general carton. Confirm the plan for firearms, ammunition and regulated equipment directly with the mover and relevant authorities.

Use Wake County hazardous-waste guidance

Wake County provides household hazardous-waste disposal guidance and facilities for residents. Check the county’s current instructions before traveling because accepted materials, preparation requirements and facility details can vary. Never place restricted chemicals in ordinary moving boxes or leave them for a crew to discover. Raleigh curbside collection also excludes hazardous waste, construction materials, unsafe-to-load objects and certain other materials, so curb placement is not a catch-all move-out solution. For current requirements, consult Wake County’s Household Hazardous Waste Facilities guidance and the City of Raleigh’s Bulky Load Collection information.

Build disposal into the pre-move timeline

Two to four weeks before the move, request the mover’s written prohibited-items list and inventory garages, sheds, utility rooms, kitchens and workshops. About one to two weeks out, identify lawful options for usable products, hazardous waste, bulky goods and construction debris; verify requirements before transporting anything. During the final days, empty fuel where manufacturer and official guidance permit, separate personal carry-on belongings, and label cartons accurately. On moving day, tell the crew about any questionable material before loading. For broader preparation, use the planning move checklist. If you still need help defining packing responsibilities, review packing services rather than assuming every possession can be boxed or loaded.
