Checklist: Sort Everything by Destination

□ Donate usable goods. Ask each organization what it currently accepts, whether drop-off requires an appointment, and whether pickup is offered. Do not leave items outside when a site is closed. □ Recycle eligible materials. Confirm material types, preparation requirements, quantities, and residency rules with the receiving program before loading your vehicle. □ Use ordinary waste collection only for accepted items. Raleigh’s residential curbside program does not collect construction materials, hazardous waste, or objects that cannot be safely loaded. Review the official rules instead of assuming every move-out item belongs at the curb. □ Separate household hazardous waste. Keep paint, batteries, chemicals, and similar products out of donation boxes and ordinary trash until you have checked Wake County’s household hazardous-waste guidance. □ Create a special plan for bulky goods. Measure each item, confirm the destination will accept it, and arrange suitable labor and transportation.

Check Acceptance Rules Before You Drive

Acceptance can depend on the item’s type, condition, size, quantity, packaging, and source. Contact the donation organization or consult the responsible government page for current rules, facility details, and operating information. For every destination, verify five points: whether the item is accepted; whether fees apply; how it must be prepared; who may use the facility; and when it can be delivered. Photograph unusual items or provide exact dimensions when asking questions. Keep confirmation details with your move plan so helpers know where each load belongs.

Handle Paint, Batteries, and Chemicals Safely

Do not pack hazardous, flammable, corrosive, pressurized, or leaking products with ordinary household goods. Wake County provides household hazardous-waste disposal guidance and facility information for residents. Keep products in their original labeled containers when possible. Do not mix chemicals, pour products into drains, or place leaking containers in a vehicle without first obtaining official handling instructions. Secure accepted containers upright for transport and follow all facility rules. Check the product label and Wake County guidance if you are unsure whether an item requires special disposal.

Plan Bulky Transport, Costs, and Responsibility

Decide who will carry each bulky item, what vehicle is appropriate, and whether stairs, narrow doors, or disassembly affect removal. Protect the building and vehicle, use safe lifting methods, and avoid loading an item that cannot be secured. Assign responsibility in writing when a mover, hauler, landlord, tenant, buyer, or donation organization is involved. Record any disposal or pickup fee, who approved it, who pays it, and whether a receipt is required. A simple inventory with the item, destination, responsible person, deadline, and completion status can prevent abandoned goods and duplicate charges. For broader sequencing and packing tasks, use the planning move checklist. If unwanted-item removal changes the inventory being transported, update the details used to request a tailored moving quote.
