Raleigh Moving Option Comparison Checklist

Compare options by deciding who will pack, carry, drive, assemble, and coordinate access. The right arrangement depends on your inventory, schedule, property rules, and available help.

Compare the work included in each option

Start with responsibilities rather than labels. A full-service arrangement may combine transportation with loading and unloading, while packing, unpacking, assembly, specialty-item handling, and storage can remain separate. Labor-only help generally leaves the vehicle, driving, fuel, equipment, and transportation risk with the customer. A rental-truck move gives you more control but also makes you responsible for pickup, operation, loading decisions, return conditions, and related logistics. Compare every option across the same categories: packing, supplies, furniture preparation, loading, transportation, unloading, placement, assembly, debris removal, and storage. Mark each task as included, optional, customer-provided, or excluded. For service-type distinctions, review the planning site’s /services/ directory. If your decision is specifically between hired labor, a rental vehicle, and comprehensive help, use the dedicated /resources/labor-only-vs-rental-truck-vs-full-service/ comparison.

Account for local access conditions

Raleigh conditions can change which option is practical. Confirm whether each address has usable truck access, driveway restrictions, stairs, gates, loading areas, elevators, docks, or property-management requirements. If a truck, container, or moving activity would affect a public street or sidewalk, consult the City of Raleigh’s temporary street-closure and permit information rather than assuming curb space may be used. Also plan separately for unwanted materials. Raleigh’s residential curbside program excludes construction materials, hazardous waste, and items that cannot be loaded safely. Wake County provides household hazardous-waste guidance and facilities. Disposal limitations may affect what you finish before move day, but they should not be treated as services automatically included with a move. Complete this preparation checklist

1. List both addresses, preferred dates, and any timing constraints. 2. Build a room-by-room inventory, including approximate box counts. 3. Flag stairs, long carries, elevators, gates, loading docks, and difficult parking. 4. Identify heavy, fragile, oversized, disassembled, or specialty items. 5. Decide which tasks you can complete safely and which require help. 6. Record who supplies boxes, padding, dollies, tie-downs, and the vehicle. 7. Ask each provider to describe inclusions, exclusions, estimate terms, valuation, and possible additional charges in writing. 8. Compare total responsibility—not only the quoted amount—including driving, fuel, equipment, packing time, building coordination, and return obligations. 9. Check the relevant regulator before selecting a carrier. North Carolina regulates intrastate household-goods movers through the North Carolina Utilities Commission; interstate movers must be registered with FMCSA. 10. Reconfirm the inventory, access plan, permitted work, date, and arrival arrangements before scheduling. Confirm these points before scheduling

Ask: What work is included? Who provides the vehicle and equipment? Is the move intrastate or interstate? What estimate type applies? Which circumstances can add authorized services or charges? How are loss or damage responsibilities described? Which items are prohibited? Who handles parking, elevator reservations, certificates of insurance, and property rules? What happens if the inventory, access, or date changes? Obtain the answers in writing and make sure the inventory and access notes match the planned move. If the options still differ in scope, request revised descriptions based on the same facts before comparing them. A project-specific estimate is most useful only after every party is pricing the same work.
